MA Project 1.12

This week started by going back over the lectures from Ben and Joe. On first listen I enjoyed their exploration of design and practice, providing insights into their approach to projects, now more than then, I find these lectures even more poignant to supporting my project. Ben talks about the use of para-fiction and truths within in his work, he applies these ideas to film but it sparked an interest in my work that I aim to explore further. Through the practice of making and documenting, something that Joe speaks highly of, I was able to refine my work and start to build a body of images that explore Bodmin and identity from my perspective, I will also aim to gain responses from residents / school children, to provide an insight and to explore participatory research. I find it interesting that though the making process and the experimentation of documentation I have stumbled across the idea of perception of identity and voice, while it was suggested in my panel review that I should not just design my research, I aim to run two ideas alongside each other. Encouraging the participation of others and the view point of my own position to explore identity and location. With these testing times I have been documenting my location but the images are subjective to the audience to insert their own narrative based on my perception. Participatory research needs to also consider the idea of narrative and ethical input. The voice of the participant should be clear, but so should their own viewpoint and position within the town. These two contrasting views start to build a complex narrative of identity and location through design and creativity.

Photography:

My aim is to continue my documentation of Bodmin through the use of photography and pin hole cameras. I think that there is an honesty to the process and simplicity that captures a town with a historical aesthetic. The first image come out well with new chemicals. The second one, I believe the paper slipped in the box but still an interesting image is the result.

Participation:

I have developed the colour scheme and use of typography on my proposed website using Adobe XD. I am sure there will be further refinements and will seek feedback for design development. This website would be used to collect designs and visual experiments from the population of Bodmin.

This week I asked a class of year 7 students to respond to one of three tasks.

  1. Design a logo for Bodmin
  2. Design a poster that promotes Bodmin and its attractions
  3. Draw an image of what you would like Bodmin to look like after lockdown
